Having premiered on the 19th of January, the third episode of Spy Classroom is mostly action-focused, with the intent of showing the audience the improvements of the team against their first real opponent, while also showing what it truly means to be a spy in this show, aside from the ability of espionage and combat skill. The episode’s pacing certainly is intriguing as the episode covers the final half of the Impossible Mission arc, with an introduction and deeper look into the antagonists’ motivation as well as the capabilities of Lily and her team, along with a surprise introduction not many had expected to see, cleverly done through the lack of information in the first episode and onwards as well.

Battle Against The Traitor
Having successfully infiltrated the lab, Team Lamplight starts the episode off with where we first saw them in episode one, confronting an enemy spy set to intercept them. However, the surprise for the audience as well as the team is who the spy happens to be. A traitor to the Din Republic, and none other than Klaus’s former master, Guido. While Team Inferno had died due to the Impossible Mission, it was all due to as Guido reveals, his betrayal.
From Klaus’s flashback we learn that not once has even Klaus defeated Guido in a one-on-one fight, giving the audience a bit of tension as to how Team Lamplight will be able to defeat Guido, or if Klaus will even arrive in time. Guido reveals that due to wire-tapping the manor, he has knowledge of their abilities and training, Team Lamplight don’t cower but instead choose to fight. What follows is a battle that looks admittedly one-sided. Despite Team Lamplight’s best efforts and improvements thanks to their training, all the members have their moments to shine and combat against Guido only to be knocked out and taken hostage by him, with Lily being the last one. Meanwhile, Klaus attempts to pick up the slack and gain the bioweapon which they were looking for, being ambushed by another spy and soldiers. However, the opposition against Klaus doesn’t last very long, with Klaus leaving one soldier alive for interrogation.

Stacked Lies Leading To Victory
Despite the individual members of Team Lamplight had been defeated by Guido, Lily remains confident even in the face of Guido’s seemingly flawless plan. However, through the communications device, Klaus manages to reveal to Guido that he had been under a misconception the entire time. The empire had already expected Team Lamplight to arrive, but the team pretended like they weren’t none the wiser to catch them off guard. In fact, everything that had happened so far was part of the teams plan. While Lily activated a seemingly dangerous poisonous gas against Guido, Guido fell for the bait, knocking her out. Even so, he had been caught off guard by crumbling debris, dodging it and leaving himself open to the culmination of all these lies and deceits. For there was an eight member that struck an injury to Guido, Codenamed Fool: Erna. With that final attack, it seemed like Team Lamplight had finally won, and in a sense they did.

However, Guido still managed to survive the attack, injured but otherwise about to defeat the team. Thankfully, Klaus had arrived in time to intercept, handing the team the vial and ordering them to escape. This left with Guido and Klaus to battle together with one final strike, of which Klaus had managed to defeat for once. Despite Guido having survived the previous attack by Erna, he was precisely one-tenth of a second slower than before, giving Klaus that opportunity he needed to secure the win.
Conclusion
Despite the mortality rate being absurdly high, all of Team Lamplight managed to survive along with Klaus. Even so, they had momentarily disbanded a week later since the team was meant to be for the one mission. When we follow Klaus’s point of view, we learn that during Guido’s defeat, he had attempted to convince him to return to the Din Republic. While Guido seemed to reminisce about their past, an unseen shot fired against him and left him dead in Klaus’s arms, stating that Klaus should work to not let his team perish. After the fact, the third episode ends with Klaus having been caught momentarily off guard by the sudden return of Lily and her teammates, who had decided to return and stay together as Team Lamplight along with Klaus as their mentor. With a small smile rare to see from the veteran Spy, the episode ends on a satisfying note.
Spy Classroom’s third episode may not have been revolutionary in terms of fight scenes or pacing, but it certainly can be said that the episode conveyed the growth and advanced foresight that spies in this world must have if they are to survive. Deceit and lies are used to their most effective result, which allowed the premise that the series started on to be fulfilled along with a promise for more of these characters. As the audience still has more episodes to watch, there will most likely be more arcs to follow.
