This was reported by Reddit user Aufinator, who purchased a copy of Spyro Reignited Trilogy on Switch in Indonesia, where it is being sold early. Aufinator, providing images to back up their claims, has confirmed that the physical cartridge version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy on Switch requires an 8.7GB download.

While some may not be bothered by this, it’s worth pointing out that requiring an 8.7GB update for the Switch version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy may be even more inconvenient than it was on other platforms. The Switch’s internal storage is a far cry from the internal hard drive space offered by the PS4 and Xbox One, so part of the appeal of buying physical games is to save space for digital titles. By making players download an update even when they buy the physical version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Activision is taking that benefit out of the equation.
The update aside, Spyro Reignited Trilogy should still be a quality game on the Switch. In our Spyro Reignited Trilogy review, we praised the game for successfully updating the classic Spyro the Dragon trilogy for modern audiences, though noted that some aspects of the game design haven’t aged all that well.
Presumably, Spyro Reignited Trilogy will provide a near-identical experience on the Switch as the other versions of the game. This means that players will still have three critically-acclaimed platformers play through, all of which have had their graphics dramatically upgraded. The download requirement is still a bummer, but those who can see past it are still likely to enjoy themselves.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy is out now for PS4 and Xbox One, with the Nintendo Switch version launching on September 3.
